Qin Feng is regarded as the representative of Chinese avant-garde art and innovative traditional Chinese ink painting. He is also one of the contemporary artists with the most works collected by museums and art institutions. His representative exhibitions include solo exhibition at the Monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore island during 2016 Venice Biennale, the opening performance at Christie's Shanghai and so on.
This exhibition focuses on Qin's series of experimental works spanning nearly two decades. Qin Feng was initially influenced by Western expressionism when he lived in Germany in the 1990s, and experimentally integrated western expression into his creation. Nearly two decades later, he had a dialogue with Renaissance masters at Monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, and again tired to expand the artistic language based on previous works. In this series of works, the artist's exploration of the theme of Yin and Yang manifests the inheritance of eastern philosophy, while exploring to transform two dimensional space into three dimensional space is an attempt to expand the boundary of traditional medium. They are in line with Qin's signature style in his ink works, reflecting the tension he builds up as always. At the same time, they are influenced by Venetian school of painting, in dialogue with Western Renaissance masters, presenting a contrast between western way of color using and Chinese brushwork style. Meanwhile, the tearing and assembling of the paper also bear the mark of Qin's performance art, a manifestation of the great sense of power in his works. These works are the rare showcases of the artist’s specific practice of blending Chinese and Western styles, forming his unique language of expression.
Through this exhibition, it is hoped that the audience gets the chance to dive into the dialogue space between the eastern context and the western expression forms that the artist has been devoting himself to constructing, and experience the harmony of the romance of western expressionist philosophy walking side by side with the majestic atmosphere of Chinese calligraphy, through witnessing the collisions between the traditional and the contemporary, conception and realization, the idea and the practice.
